Phil Moore

  • Phil is a long time North Shore resident with 3 children (now adults) and has been hooked on the guitar since his first lesson as a 9 year old. Phil started writing songs and formed his first band as a college student in the 80's. A couple of years later they were touring New Zealand and releasing records on the world famous Flying Nun record label.

Phil was able to share his passion for music and experience as a musician with his son Jacob, and in 2003 he helped their band "The Checks" prepare for the Smokefree Rockquest music competition where they made it to the national finals. Phil continued to work with The Checks as their manager, organising concerts and tours to Australia, England, Japan and the USA, a record contract with SonyBMG in the UK, support gigs with Oasis, AC/DC and REM, and Tui Awards for Best Rock Album at both the 2010 and 2012 New Zealand Music Awards.

Phil also spent time teaching at MAINZ (Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand). He is now teaching at six primary schools on the North Shore and looks forward to helping your child on their journey as a guitarist.

  • No one in our family is musical or plays any instruments but our son showed some interest in the guitar so we thought why not give it a try and see how it goes. With Phil's guidance our son has turned into a confident guitar player that would happily sit and practice without any prompting. He looked forward to the classes every week and came home inspired to try what he learned. He loved his time with Phil and we can highly recommend him to any student wanting to learn the guitar

  • Phil has been teaching our, now 10 year old, son guitar for the last 3 years. Archer came to Phil with no experience and a bit of apprehension about his ability to learn - particularly as he's left handed and didn't want to 'stick out'. Phil has consistently offered a calm, inclusive, patient and supportive learning environment which has allowed Archer to become a confident player who leaves every lesson excited, and proud, to practice whatever it is they've learned. Phil's prices are very reasonable and in my opinion well worth it - I highly recommend his services to anyone and everyone.

  • We have found Phil to be an excellent guitar teacher for our son. He is kind, patient, fun and a great communicator. We have seen the improvements in our son's ability over the two years he has had lessons with Phil and he is engaged and excited to play. Even better that they happen in school time so it is one less after school activity, which suits our family. Thanks Phil.
